Rug Trends 2022

Earthy Tones + Splash of Colour

Neutral and earthy colours have always been favoured in rugs because they are easy to use and match well with other interior elements in the room. Soft muted colours create a peaceful ambiance and never go out of style. These colours are dominating in living room, bedroom and dining room rugs this year. However, splash of colour is also present - mainly in other parts of the house. Bolder rugs are seen in hallways or on stairs. We have experienced that multi-colour stripe runners are well liked and assured to be a talking point for visitors. Perfect example is the below Calypso stripe carpet we made for our Tauranga client.

Oval Shapes

Round rugs have been very popular for a few years now as they help to offset straight lines in the room. They tend to visually increase the size of the space so they look great in smaller rooms. What is very interesting though is that we have seen a big demand for oval-shaped rugs this year. We think they are just a bit different, more interesting than round rugs, and they immediately attract attention with their intriguing shape.

Round and oval shaped rugs are often enhanced by interior objects and furniture in similar shapes (such as round table, ottoman or chairs with rounded corners).

Sleek vs. Shaggy

We have noticed that the location within New Zealand has also an impact on the rug choice. North Island customers predominantly prefer sleek textures (such as our Bells Junction nylon rugs or lower pile wool rugs) while shaggy rugs with rich, warm textures are more popular with South Island customers, where it is colder, and rugs are desired to add warmth as well as serve a decorating touch.

Colourful Carpets

More and more customers are looking for 100% high-quality NZ wool carpet in other than standard colours, to add a pop of colour and make the room special. However, we have been surprised by this years’ orders of bright-coloured carpets – to name a few, thus far this year we have made a grass green, sapphire blue, light yellow and bright orange wall-to-wall carpets.
AND WE LOVE IT!
